AI-103: Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer
AI-103 (Developing AI Apps and Agents on Azure) is the exam for Microsoft's new Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate certification. It is an associate, developer-level exam built on Python and Microsoft Foundry, and it covers generative AI, AI agents, computer vision, text analysis and information extraction. As Microsoft retires AI-102 on 30 June 2026, AI-103 becomes the main Azure AI engineering credential.

What is the AI-103 exam?
AI-103 validates that you can build, manage and deploy AI agents and apps on Azure using Python and Microsoft Foundry. Microsoft describes the audience as an Azure AI engineer whose responsibilities include planning and managing Azure AI solutions, implementing generative AI and agentic solutions, and building computer vision, text analysis and information extraction solutions. Passing it earns the Azure AI Apps and Agents Developer Associate credential.
AI-102 to AI-103: what is changing?
AI-102 (Azure AI Engineer Associate) retires on 30 June 2026, and its course, AI-102T00, is replaced by AI-103T00. AI-103 is the new Azure AI engineering exam, but it is not a simple rename. AI-102 leaned on wiring up pre-built Azure AI services; AI-103 is rebuilt around Microsoft Foundry, with a much larger emphasis on generative AI, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and multi-agent orchestration. If you prepared for AI-102, expect to study fresh material for AI-103.

If you are starting out, AI-901 (Azure AI Fundamentals) is the right first move: it proves AI literacy, needs no coding background, and gives you the vocabulary that AI-103 assumes. AI-103 is the associate, developer-level rung above it - it expects Python and hands-on Azure work. A common path is to pass AI-901 to build a foundation, then climb to AI-103 once you are comfortable building with Microsoft Foundry.

What is the difference between AI-102 and AI-103?
AI-102 focused on wiring up pre-built Azure AI services. AI-103 shifts toward building generative AI applications and multi-agent solutions with Microsoft Foundry: retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), tool-calling agents, multimodal models, and responsible AI guardrails. The largest single area on AI-103 is implementing generative AI and agentic solutions (30-35%).
Do I need to know Python for AI-103?
Yes. Microsoft states you should have experience developing apps using Python, and be familiar with general AI, generative AI and Azure services. Unlike the Fundamentals exams, AI-103 is a developer-level associate exam that assumes you write code.
What is the passing score for AI-103?
You need a score of 700 or greater to pass, the same threshold Microsoft uses across its role-based exams. Scores are scaled, so it is not a flat percentage of questions answered correctly.
How long is the AI-103 exam?
Microsoft lists 120 minutes to complete the assessment. It is proctored, may include interactive components, and is scheduled through Pearson VUE. Pricing is set by the country or region where the exam is proctored.
Is AI-901 enough, or should I take AI-103?
They serve different goals. AI-901 (Azure AI Fundamentals) proves AI literacy and is the natural starting point. AI-103 is the associate, developer-level step above it: it assumes Python and hands-on Azure work. Many people pass AI-901 first to build confidence, then move up to AI-103.
